Cooking oil recycling Diepsloot
Reduce pollution by recycling
Diepsloot is a densely populated Township in the north of Johannesburg. Used cooking oil is normally thrown away. This causes blocked drains and pollution in a community that already lacks access to basic services such as running water and rubbish removal. A team of four students spotted this problem and saw an opportunity.
After researching supply and demand they developed the Diepsloot Oil Collection & Recycling Company that collects used oil from door to door, and then sells it to recycling companies. This also tackles another problem the team discovered: some vendors resell used oil, a real health hazard.
